I'm just watching The Culture Show (with John Cale interview to come), and the first feature is on the death of the pub. Cheap alchohol from supermarkets and horrid chains like Wetherspoon and Yates, mean that the precious 'local' is on the verge of extinction. The stat's absolutely horrible, as the British public house is an institution. Many a local I've been in is a wamr and welcoming place, unlike the alternative loud, characterless, idiot-filled chain pubs. To have a few drinks with open people, ending the night with a sing-a-long, much prefered to fighting your way to a bar beside people intent on getting drunk, is a delight I'll be sad to lose. My current local (a family owned business) is dying, the last half a dozen times I've been in there's been no more than a dozen patrons in, and it saddens me to see my friend losing money week in, week out, knowing that this is a common thing up and down the land. One of my old locals... ...such a scene was a common one (particularly the relatives being there!), and many times I've drunkenly sang there at 3am. I should go back sometime, the lady nearest the camera has a bit of a thing for me
